ABOUT THE INTERVENTION
Each participating student will be part of an online class with a highly qualified teacher, certified in mathematics and trained to teach the course to eighth grade students. While the online teacher is the "teacher-of-record" responsible for the class, each participating school will also appoint an on-site proctor/liaison who will make direct, face-to-face contact with each student on a regular basis. The proctor does not need to be a qualified mathematics teacher and can be another teacher, a librarian, a computer teacher, a guidance counselor, a teacher's aide or an adult volunteer. This person is responsible for ensuring that students have sufficient access to the technology required for the course, proctoring exams, supervising students' behavior when they participate in the course, and serving as a personal contact for students and parents when needed. The online teacher and the on-site proctor serve as a support team for each student participating in the online algebra course.
